I found out it's an easy job to repaint them. The concrete goose never looked better! And I take a bonus concrete cactus project I painted using watercolors!

This is my showtime fourth dimension at painting a concrete or statue. My neighbor has a vintage concrete goose statue that's been in her yard for as long as I can call up and it was in bad demand of a makeover. My neighbor, Evelyn,  told me one day she was probably only going to have to get rid of it. Nope, non on my watch. I like seeing that goose from my workshop door and I know she would miss it.

I told Evelyn I would try to paint the goose but non to have whatsoever high expectations. After all, I'thousand not a decorative painter or artist. Although we've been neighbors for close to 30 years I've just gotten to know her really well over the past 3 or 4 years. Evelyn's husband was killed in the Vietnam War and she never remarried.

She is super funny and smart and tells the most amazing stories. She keeps me laughing. We have a lunch engagement in one case a week merely sometimes she doesn't feel upward to having dejeuner. She gets around bang-up for an fourscore year old and she is always running hither and at that place, shopping and visiting with friends. I recollect it's great.

The Vintage Concrete Goose Statue I Repainted For My Neighbor

Anyhow, this is how the poor goose looked before I started her makeover. And I say her because I noticed barely there, faded, painted on eyelashes. I don't have any thought how old this poor affair is but she has plain been standing outside for a while.

Yous tin can see but had bad she looks in the closeup photograph above. Lots of cracks and places where the cement/concrete had broken down. $.25 and pieces are broken off of the tail and base. I was really beginning to wonder if I could bring this trivial goose back to life. Tin can you encounter those eyelashes I mentioned earlier? Isn't that funny. Sometimes it's the simplest things that plough an item into a conversation piece.

I grabbed some Gorilla Mucilage for the cracks and filled the holes and cracks the best I could trying not to bit off more of the cement. And then I wrapped the beak and head with painters tape until the glue dried. It seemed to piece of work. Recollect where there's a volition there'due south a way.

white FolkArt Coastal Texture paint

Yous guys take to remember I'm just wingin' it (no pun intended) because I've never painted a garden statue. I was definitely going to give the footling goose my best though.

Use The Right Paint

Good matter at that place was enough original pigment on the goose that I could kind of figure out where the paint lines were. I used FolkArt Coastal Textured Pigment (find here on Amazon) for the torso of the goose. The paint is for indoor/outdoor projects and was perfect for this outdoor statue. Since this little girl spends all her time out in the sun outdoor paint is a must.

repainting a lawn statue

That was the but outdoor paint I had in the colors I needed so the remainder of the paint is acrylic from the small bottles like y'all get at the craft store. These are also multi-surface outdoor paints so we will run across how well they work. I found the perfect colour in my sash for the bill.

Pigment The Statue

The webbed feet are the same orange color. I used a variety of different size brushes and I didn't utilise record for straight lines or anything. The goose was a niggling rough so I didn't retrieve it would exist a big deal if the paint wasn't perfect.

mixing the perfect green color

I didn't have the right green paint color either and then I added black to a scrap of green acrylic paint to make it darker. You tin can meet the deviation in the paint colors in the picture above. The original green pigment was as well light and glaring.

repairing and painting a goose garden statue

The special mix greenish was but right. When I don't have a sure color fifty-fifty when working on a article of furniture projection I will mix colors together until I get the shade I similar. I tried to get the paint into all the nooks and crannies where the cement had broken off or was cracked. A small-scale pigment brush worked all-time for these small hard to get to areas.

dry brush details like wings

The body color of the goose was too uniform and the feathers blended in so I dry brushed a flake of very pale, silvery blue paint over the feather details. I think it does brand the feathers stand up out a bit looking at the goose from the street. A bit of contrast adds depth and dimension to paint projects like this one.

adding eyelashes to the goose lawn ornament for a whimsical touch

I painted the eyes black with Beyond Paint in Licorice and added the eyelashes with a black Permanent Sharpie. Whatever works right?

Krylon sealer to protect paint

I'm non sure all that paint is going to stay on even though I sprayed several coats of Krylon Sealer on the finished Goose.

Return The Goose To It'south Abode

Isn't she beautiful. I'k  glad I could practise this for my Evelyn and she was and so happy. She lives correct next door to us and I see this goose everyday if I look out the garage door of the workshop or if I'm working on a projection outside.

Evelyn is e'er telling me stories about her family, the old days, and the history of the expanse nosotros live in. She is one smart and well informed lady and and then many subjects. Funny too. One of the stories she told me was most when the Aliens landed in Hopkinsville, Kentucky in 1955. Now, that is right upwardly the highway from united states and where my favorite junk shop is located. She started telling me that story and she had me in stitches. I just had to Google it after that and certain enough, the story she told me is truthful. Y'all can read the alien story here….  'Lilliputian Green Men'.

Goose lawn statue with a patriotic box

Physical Goose Statue with Patriotic Bow Necktie

I took this photo a couple of days after we returned the goose to it's habitation. You can see it has a patriotic bow now. How To Paint A Concrete Cactus Using Watercolors

The cactus is just the cutest matter always at present. The secret to this look is using several paint colors to keep the painted cactus from looking flat or i dimensional. The whole paint job took less than 3 hours including downtime……..watching  paint dry. Maybe I should show you how the cactus looked earlier I painted it then you'll sympathise why I'm tickled pink.

concrete cactus needs painting

I picked upward the physical cactus at my favorite junk shop for $5. Information technology was apparently onetime rough concrete, no paint, no nothing, so it was a blank slate. I didn't notice the steer skull at the base until I got it home. I think this cactus belongs in Texas.

FolkArt Watercolor Acrylic Paint and Watercolor Paint Brushes

The paint I used for the project is FolkArt ® Watercolor Acrylic Paint™. The watercolor paint can exist used on outdoor items as well every bit indoor stuff. Perfect for the cactus.

Painting a concrete cactus with watercolors

The first step was to give the cactus an all over paint finish. I mixed the white and sap dark-green watercolors together to make a stake green and brushed it all over the cactus. I dipped the watercolor castor in h2o to spread the paint on the cactus. The assuming concentrated colors spread easily. I didn't even apply one-half of the two oz. bottle of sap dark-green and the color is going to evidence upwardly over again in the makeover.

The side by side step after the first coat of pigment was dry was to brush over the ridges of the cactus with sap greenish watercolor. I used the largest brush from the FolkArt® Watercolor Acrylic Pigment™ Watercolor Brush Prepare to paint the cactus.

3-IMG_2805

The 3rd stride is painting the grooves of the cactus using the turquoise watercolor. I thinned the paint past dipping the watercolor castor in water and mixing it with the pigment on a paper plate . The thinned turquoise paint is more of a wash and is a adept dissimilarity to the pale green colour and the sap greenish color.

4-IMG_2804 This is how the cactus looked with the three paint layers. Layering paints keeps the finish from being flat and wearisome. The cactus wouldn't accept looked the aforementioned with but one overall paint colour.

6-IMG_2811We have one more than step. Adding those little prickly things which I learned are called spines. Nosotros didn't have many cactus where I grew up in Arkansas. I used the smallest watercolor castor and dabbed blackness watercolor paint hither and there on the ridges of the cactus. You might notice a kid motorcar in the background of this photo. Miss Sofi was kind enough to accept this photo of me adding the spines.

Concrete Cactus Makeover Using Watercolors

See why I'chiliad amused with the paint task? Doing the happy dance. I painted the steer skull with a mixture of white and gray watercolors and I painted the sand or clay with a mixture of white and ochre watercolors.
